NeillyRich to return for festival Continued from page 1 The duo confirmed the announcement via their Facebook page earlier this week. It is Amelia’s first Blues, Brews and BBQ’s festival, and Matthew’s first since he played with his old band Red House in the early 2000s. Matthew says he enjoyed playing there last time, and expects more of the same this time around. “To me Blues and Brews was always a staple for music culture in Blenheim. When it all dissolved, the same open-air festival atmosphere as Blues and Brews was not accessible any more. “It was a great festival and it always had potential, and to be able to come back and reawaken it is pretty special.” He says he is excited this year’s event has no age restriction. “It doesn’t exclude people just because they don’t have children.
“Last time I remember the crowd was really into it. Everyone up front was having a good time. “I remember looking up, seeing all the people and thinking ‘this is special.” Matthew and Amelia will be playing country-rock music, as well as incorporating some blues elements for the festival. Currently, NeillyRich is touring New South Wales, working towards releasing a new album at the end of the year. Recently they released a single ‘Together with You,’ which has spent six weeks on the Australian country music charts, and were nominated in the top country music group/duo category at the New Zealand Country Music Awards. Blues, Brews and BBQs will be held at A&P Park on November 28. Last year’s event was cancelled due to declining interest.

As New Zealand shivered in one of its coldest night’s in history, Blenheim also took a lashing yesterday morning. The temperature dropped to as low as minus five overnight yesterday and it was still minus four at 8am in the Blenheim CBD. The cooler weather was expected to last until Thursday, with a lack of cloud cover and southerly conditions the main causes of the dip in temperature. Pukaki, near Mt Cook, recorded the minus 20 degrees temperature early on Tuesday. Ironically, that is cooler than most domestic freezers. New Zealand’s coldest temperature on record was minus 25 in Ranfurly, Central Otago, in 1903.

‘Wood Guy’ woe continues By Jacob Page Rosanne Anderson says she has also been duped out of money by Robin Georgeson who promised her a wood seat. Robin, also known as The Wood Guy in Havelock, appears to have gone to ground after Christchurch man Ross Langford went to The Sun to claim he was left out of pocket $825 after paying a 75 per cent deposit for furniture in January. Roseanne says she paid a $375 deposit to Robin for a wooden bench worth $500 in March and has not heard from him since April. She was going to donate the bench to the Grovetown Lagoon Restoration Group where she is the volunteer co-ordinator. “I organised it in March and in April he said everything was going good and he was just waiting on a top coat and it would be done. “Since then, I’ve heard nothing… It’s really disappointing. “I’m surprised this sort of thing can happen in small towns. “I had hoped people would be able to sit and enjoy the hidden secret of Marlborough that is the Grovetown Lagoon.” Roseanne says she would write a letter to Havelock Police to

Car floats away Blenheim Police have arrested a man for unlawfully taking a vehicle after an incident on Saturday morning in which a car was seen floating out to sea before disappearing under the water. Police received the report from a member of the public about 11am of a red car floating out to sea with its hazard lights on near the Wairau Diversion. The car then disappeared under the water. The witness also reported seeing a man standing on the bank nearby. He was close to what appeared to be a pile of household rubbish. The owner of the car, who is known to the offender, was located and there is no information to suggest anyone was in the vehicle when it entered the water. A view of Grovetown Lagoon.

Liquor operation nabs two underage liquor sales

A controlled purchase operation in Marlborough on Friday evening saw two 17-year-old volunteers visit 16 premises during the operation and 14 of those refused to sell the minor alcohol. By Adam Poulopoulos More Marlborough residents expressed their concerns about broadband and mobile connectivity at a meeting on Monday night, as the deadline to submit for government funding approaches. Marlborough residents placed pins in council-provided maps to indicate poor connectivity, having done the same in a previous meeting on May 25. Digital Development Associates digital strategy associate Chris O’Connell says locals needed to continue to make their concerns heard. “The squeaky wheels get oiled. “Leaping up and down and making a case helps. “If the Government money wasn’t there, how would we go about solving these problems anyway?” Residents say the poor connectivity is a social, economic and health and safety issue.

problems during flooding, when some properties are only contactable by short wave radio. Marlborough Sounds resident Margaret Allison says her broadband connection is good, but she has to rely on her landline, as she receives no cell phone reception when driving.
O’Connell finished the meeting by showing the example of Whangarei, which has been provided ultra-fast broadband by far north electricity provider Northpower. O’Connell says the project was finished under-budget and one year ahead of schedule, and with Whangarei now having the highest UFB uptake in the country, looking outside the main providers was an option to consider. The Marlborough District Council’s broadband steering group has until Friday, July 3 to make a submission to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to improve connectivity. The Government announced a $360 million fund to expand urban and rural broadband, and fix mobile black spots, in last month’s budget.
Health grants boost region The Canterbury Community Trust has announced $152,300 in grants into the Marlborough region for its Health and Wellbeing funding sector. The Trust received funding requests totalling over $562,000. According to Chief Executive, Louise Edwards, applications in this area over the last three years are almost double the amount of the Trust’s available budget for this sector, with grants approved totalling $738,000 against $1.8 million in funding requests. identified by the Nelson/Marlborough District Health Board - Maori and low socioeconomic groups. Research also indicates while smoking rates in the region are continuing to decline, it is still a major health problem and is inequitably higher amongst Maori and Pasifika people. “Focus areas for the community gathered through the District Health Board’s health needs assessment are around chronic illness, oral health especially for children and the number of smokers,” says Ms Edwards.

It’s pretty good here I reckon. I’ve just got the girls into it and it’s pretty strong here.
It’s a tricky decision with so much mixed emotion. They need to look at where is best for the future. They really need to update the facilities, no matter how they do it.
I suppose as long as there are courts for them to play netball they don’t really care where it is.
It’s really dependent on parking. Whenever we go to Lansdowne Park and watch the kids play rugby it’s a helluva job to find parking there.

Fairfax Mogul Dear Ed, Well said Les Whiteside in your article on the decline of daily newspapers. Your views were most interesting and perceptive and underline the stupidity of the decision which lets the corporate mogul Fairfax get an all-dominating stranglehold on our newspapers. With it has come a lack of investigative journalism and absurd front-page stories more befitting of a tabloid rag. As to the Marlborough Express the lack of proofreading results in a sub-standard paper. Last week an article on ‘Retirement Bosses’ by Alan Wood started off with ‘tive of Metlifecare—’ then after several paragraphs ended up last line with ‘The survey showed as chief execu——’ Get what went wrong? Picton library Dear Ed, I see that a council offshoot group called Smart & Connected is asking for suggestions on a name for the new Picton Library. Why, how, by when and what they intend to do with the list of suggested names is not clear. The appropriate way to choose the most popular name would be to pass the suggestions on to Picton’s forum who, in the meantime establish a pre-selection sub-committee of their member representatives, which would
in due course select the best five or six names. These would then be put to the vote of ratepayers purchasing goods at say three designated local shops by their dropping a disc in to a glass vessel thereby indicating their choice. This method has been used before in voting for charity funding preferences. The most popular name(s) being submitted to council for its final choice. Gary Riggs
Exceptional Care Dear Ed On the May 31st at 6.30pm my wife Barbara was admitted to Wairau Hospital where she stayed until June 4, when at 11.00am she was transferred to Maxwell Care Home in Maxwell Road. The object of this note is to thank those two establishments for the exceptional care bestowed on her and the care and respect given her husband and family whilst in their

Official languages Dear Ed, How many of you are aware that New Zealand has two official languages - and English is not one of them? My local MP Simon Bridges confirmed it There is no legislation that enshrines English as an official language of New Zealand. He suggested I start a petition to the House of Representatives. He will present my petition to Parliament and the wording has been approved by the Clerk of the House. The two official languages are sign language made official in 2006 and the maori language in 1987. I have launched the petition in Tauranga and it is doing very well locally. Some local shopkeepers have it on their counters as does the local RSA. Perhaps you belong to a walking group, a garden or craft group or even a service or Probus club - could you take it along to your meeting? Heritage, history and honour Prue Matthews received a Queen’s Service Medal for services to heritage preservation. Prue talks to Sun reporter Alice Peacock about her years of commitment to the uncovering and preservation of Marlborough’s history.
It seems unlikely that anyone knows the history of Marlborough quite as well as Prue Matthews, who has been recognised by the Queen for services to heritage preservation. Prue has always had a fascination with “all things old”. She has spent her years immersed in the history of Marlborough since her family moved to the area from Christchurch in 1958. “I love the books, I love the history, and I love working for the people to assemble any history that they want to learn or preserve.” The heritage preservation work that has brought Prue commendation include restoration work on the ex-convict ship Edwin Fox, the cob cottage at Riverlands, and the Whites Bay Cable Station. The avid historian is also behind restoration work at Brayshaw Heritage Park, and has been a contributor to the establishment of several Marlborough museums. Prue’s passion for the past started
off as a family affair. Close friends of her parents owned a farm north of Canterbury, where Prue used to enjoy exploring and fossicking with her sisters. “We used to spend a fabulous amount of time on the farm. The evidence of the Maori having had been there, that was always fascinating to us.” Prue married fellow historian Neville Matthews in 1959, gaining a companion for her journeys into the past in doing so. She was swept up in the field trips that he regularly took place in as a member of the Marlborough Historical Society, and the two would spend their spare time learning more about the region. “We’d get in the car after work, and would head out and explore the area. “We really became immersed in the history here.” Alongside her heritage preservation work, Prue has co-written several books documenting the lives of Marlborough’s people and events. She wrote the obitu-
aries for the Marlborough Express for over ten years, fulfilling a fascination with the older generation. Prue’s second, but not secondary passion is for art. She has been a member of the Marlborough Art Society for 40 years, running workshops and contributing to exhibitions. The mother-of-three currently teaches a pastel painting class: “Pastels with Prue” every Friday, as well as continuing to express herself through painting in her spare time. That, she says, is how she expressed her excitement about receiving notice of the Queen’s Service Medal. “I didn’t scream about it, I just put it into my art.” Prue says she will carry on with her historical work, but will stick with examining the history of those who passed before her: “old history, rather than new history”. The history of today, she said, she will leave to historians that follow in her footsteps.

Babies course offered Blenheim Playcentre will run its popular Babies Building Blocks course again in July and expects places to go fast. The ten week course, for six-12 month old babies and their parents / caregivers, offers a chance to experience what a playcentre is like, and to learn from others who have navigated that first year with a baby. “Playcentre is run by families for families. Parents learn from each other in a supportive environment,” course facilitator Poz Poswillo says, a team leader from Blenheim Playcentre. The Babies Building Blocks course is for all parents, whether younger, older, ‘first timers’ or those with older siblings in tow. “People enjoy exploring different types of play with their babies and find it helpful to ask questions,”Poz says. Gemma Franken, first time mum to toddler Nico, was sceptical about playcentre before she joined the Babies Building Blocks course. “I heard there’s lots of work involved with playcentre and that kids run wild. I wasn’t sure how that would get them ready for school.”
Since completing the course Gemma has stayed at playcentre and is working her way through the free courses on offer. Training includes how to deal with challenging child behaviour, and how to help children learn to their fullest potential. “Nico loves playcentre and coming here has built my confidence as a mum. Children explore through play and the adults join in, helping them make the most of the learning opportunities. “Kids don’t run wild, they have fun and gain confidence while adults become friends. “We always welcome people who want to find out more,” Poz says, “At playcentre children develop the curiosity and courage to try new things, and the motivation to extend themselves. These skills are some of the essential building blocks that prepare them to succeed in later years”. Too much sugar As kids, we were taught that too much sugar would rot our teeth, but today we know that the ramifications of a lifelong sugar splurge are scarier than a finger-wagging dentist. Here are just a few of the malfunctions related to a lifetime of sweet indulgence: Heart Disease People on the high end of the sugar spectrum were also more likely to have dangerously high levels of blood fats called triglycerides. Cancer Scientists have long known that cancer cells
love glucose. A common scan used to detect cancer in the body, called a PET, starts with a person downing a sugary solution. After the sugar is absorbed into the bloodstream, the scan identifies possible malignancies by highlighting areas that gobble up the most sugar. Diabetes Type 2 diabetes, a deadly disease that can cause blindness and nerve damage, and can lead to amputations of digits and limbs, is perhaps the most direct and serious repercussion of excess sugar in the diet. Candida Yeast is a natural inhabitant of the gut. Healthy bacteria help keep yeast levels in check. But when antibiotics, illness or chronic stress kill off healthy bacteria, yeast can run amok. Alcohol harm debate welcomed Injury Prevention Aotearoa welcomes the debate around reducing alcohol-related harm, sparked by clinical toxicologist and ED specialist Dr Paul Quigley’s statement about the relative safety of pure ecstasy (MDMA) over alcohol. “The suggestion that an illegal drug could be safer than the country’s favourite beverage will make people think twice about their drinking,” says Injury Prevention Aotearoa drug and alcohol spokesperson, Papa Nahi. “For too long, alcohol has been the elephant in the room, but we need to take a fresh look at reducing alcohol harm and raising awareness.” Screening of patients at Wellington A&E has shown alcohol accounts for two-thirds of late night and weekend admissions. The links between alcohol and domestic violence, anti-social behaviour and depression are also well known. Now evidence is coming to light of the increased risk of certain cancers, as presented at an alcohol and cancer conference in Wellington this week, the first of its type in New Zealand. “We are at the same point with alcohol as we were with smoking 50 years ago, when people were just becoming aware of the links

MacKenzie takes silver Marlborough-born rower Sophie MacKenzie has won a silver medal at the Rowing World Cup in Varese, Italy. MacKenzie and crew mate Julia Edward finished second in the lightweight double sculls final, in a time of six minutes and 54 seconds, about a quarter of a second behind Charlotte Taylor and Katherine Copeland of Great Britain.

The New Zealand crew had made the final after winning both their heat and a semi-final race. MacKenzie was returning to Varese, where she and Zoe McBride took lightweight double sculls gold in last year’s under-23 world championships. Other Marlburians rowing at the tournament included Karl Manson, whose quadruple sculls
crew finished third in the B final and Tom Murray, who was part of the men’s eight which finished fourth. Axel Dickinson and Patrick McInnes were third in the C final of the men’s pair. Overall, New Zealand crew took four golds, a silver and a bronze at the event.
Gymnastics Cricket weekend a success About 750 Marlborough students from 16 primary schools took part in Friday’s schools’ gymnastics festival at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000. They were joined by gymnasts from around the country competing in the Marlborough Gymnastics Championships on Saturday and Sunday.
Ben Wheeler had a strong all-round game but it was not enough to win the deciding one-day international against England. The left-hander hit 39 not out off 28 balls as New Zealand finished on 283-9, and took 2-33 off five overs bowling first-change. England won the match by three wickets on the Duckworth-Lewis method to take the series 3-2. The series concluded this morning with a twenty20 international.
